If your teeth are misaligned, correcting their positioning could enhance your facial aesthetics and boost your confidence. But how can you get started on accomplishing that? There are a number of different treatments that might work for you. Let’s talk about the difference between Invisalign and veneers when it comes to fixing crooked teeth.
Invisalign
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that moves the teeth by applying gentle, sustained pressure via clear plastic aligners. As you work your way through your series of aligners, your teeth gradually shift into their proper positions. It usually takes several months or longer for Invisalign to achieve its final results. Many patients love Invisalign because it is more convenient than traditional orthodontics, and the aligners are discreet enough that they do not call a lot of attention to themselves.
Veneers
Unlike Invisalign, veneers do not actually move the teeth. Rather, they disguise dental misalignment. They are thin pieces of porcelain that get attached to the fronts of the teeth. They can thus hide a range of aesthetic imperfections, including some minor cases of dental misalignment. Veneers treatment typically takes just a few appointments to complete, and the results are incredibly natural-looking.
Which Is Better?
Neither Invisalign nor veneers are “better” than the other. However, they are usually suitable for two different types of patients. Invisalign might be right for you if:
- You have significant dental misalignment. Invisalign can address most orthodontic issues, including those that veneers cannot hide. It can even correct some cases of overbite and underbite.
- You are happy with the size, shape, and color of your teeth. Invisalign only moves your teeth. It does not alter their appearance in other ways.
On the other hand, veneers might be right for you if:
- Your dental misalignment is quite minor. For example, veneers can hide a small gap between the front teeth or other issues that are relatively simple and do not threaten your oral health. More severe cases of misalignment should not be hidden. Rather, they should be corrected through orthodontics.
- You want a total smile makeover. Veneers can make your teeth appear brighter, bigger, or more symmetrical.
Your dentist is the best person to help you decide which treatment is a better fit for your circumstances.
Can You Get Both Invisalign and Veneers?
Do want the teeth-straightening power of Invisalign and the transformative magic of veneers? You may be able to undergo both treatments. Keep in mind, though, that veneers should be placed only after your teeth are straightened because they can make orthodontic treatment more complicated.
