Lumineers vs. Porcelain Veneers in Schenectady: Which is Better?

July 17, 2018

Filed under: Uncategorized — Dr. Erin Page @ 1:17 pm

Pristine white teethFor decades, two of the most popular cosmetic treatments in Hollywood have been porcelain veneers and Lumineers. With either of these procedures, a skilled dentist can fix/disguise an entire range of dental flaws at the same time, including noticeable stains, chips, cracks, and gaps. At Capital Smiles, we’re happy to offer both Lumineers and porcelain veneers in Schenectady so that our patients have the chance to smile just like the stars. If you’re looking to improve the appearance of your smile, the question is: which one would be best for you? Today, we’re going to directly compare them so you can make a well-informed decision about your smile.

How Are they Similar?

  • Both involve placing thin ceramic shells over the teeth in order to correct imperfections.
  • Both can give you a whiter smile and are resistant to staining.
  • Both can make slightly crooked teeth appear straighter.
  • Both are ideal for closing noticeable gaps between teeth.
  • Both are custom-designed according to a patient’s specifications and made by a master ceramist.
  • Both can provide either a subtle touch-up or a dramatic makeover if desired.
  • Both are made of a strong and durable material that is easy to maintain.
  • Both options have a similar price and take about the same amount of time to get.

How Are They Different?

While Lumineers and veneers are both excellent options for enhancing the overall look of your smile and hiding flaws, the procedure to get either one is notably different:

  • Porcelain Veneers: Before veneers can be placed onto the teeth, Dr. Page will need to remove a small amount of enamel to ensure that they lay perfectly flat and look natural. They only need to remove about 5mm to accomplish this, which is the thickness of a contact lens. Veneers are slightly thicker and stronger than Lumineers, so they are a better choice for someone who is looking for a permanent change to their smile.
  • Lumineers: With Lumineers, however, the coverings are fitted onto the teeth as is, making it a less invasive procedure overall. In order to avoid a bulky or overdone appearance, Lumineers are thinner than veneers, though they are still quite durable. They are an excellent option for someone who doesn’t want to permanently alter their teeth. Because they require fewer steps to be placed, they can usually be applied much quicker as well.
