I Have Restorations on My Teeth — Can I Get Invisalign?

Invisalign is one of the most convenient ways to correct dental misalignment, and many patients are eligible for it. But what if your teeth have restorations on them, such as crowns, bridges, or veneers? Can they adversely affect your candidacy for Invisalign? That really depends on the specifics of your situation, but in most cases, restorations will not stop you from using Invisalign. This blog post provides more information on how crowns, bridges, and veneers might affect your clear aligner treatment.

Restorations and Invisalign

If you have veneers or crowns on your teeth, they may simply move along with your teeth as Invisalign shifts them closer to their ideal positions. However, your dentist might decide to take your treatment a bit more slowly than they would otherwise.

It is also worth noting that if your veneers are hiding small gaps between your teeth, the veneers might need to be removed or replaced so Invisalign can permanently close those gaps.

Please note: If you do not yet have veneers, it would be best to wait to get them until after you finish your orthodontic treatment.

Things are a bit different if you have a dental bridge. In all likelihood, your bridge will remain in its current position as Invisalign shifts your other teeth. However, if the teeth beneath the bridge need to be shifted, it might be necessary for your bridge to be removed. After you finish Invisalign, you may receive a new bridge.

Does Invisalign Damage Dental Restorations?

Your dental team will do everything in their power to reduce the risk of damage to your restorations during your orthodontic treatment. However, there is still a small chance that they could break or loosen. Veneers come with the highest risk of damage because they are made of very thin porcelain. If any of your restorations break or come off unexpectedly during your Invisalign treatment, make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible so they can address the problem.

The good news is that even though your restorations might get damaged during Invisalign treatment, the risk of that happening is actually lower with clear aligners than it is with traditional metal braces. That is because Invisalign is not bonded onto the restorations and uses gentler force.

Getting Started with Treatment

When you visit your dentist for an Invisalign consultation, they will consider all relevant factors before they start designing your treatment plan. They will analyze your restorations and how they may affect your treatment, and they can answer your questions so you have realistic expectations for the road ahead. They may even be able to show you a computer simulation of the results you may enjoy after you finish Invisalign.

Crowns, veneers, and bridges can cause your orthodontic treatment to be a bit complex, but they are not a contraindication for Invisalign! Talk to your dentist to learn more about your options for achieving a straighter, healthier smile.
