In order for dental implants to succeed, they need to have a strong base of support. In other words, your jawbone should be strong enough and thick enough to keep them securely in place for the long haul. But what if your jawbone is not currently up to the task of supporting your new teeth? You might need a bone graft. Read on below to learn more about this aspect of the dental implant process.
What Is a Bone Graft?
A bone graft is an oral surgery. During the procedure, extra bone material is placed on the jaw. Over time, the jaw should integrate the added material, resulting in a larger and stronger base for dental implants.
There are a number of different types of bone grafts. For example, the grafted material might be artificial, from another species, or from another place in your body. It could come in the form of granules or a block of bone.
If you need a bone graft, your dentist will inform you about the specific details of your surgery.
Why Are Bone Grafts Sometimes Necessary?
The human body is quite efficient. When a natural tooth is extracted, the part of the jawbone that once extracted it begins to be recycled. This process, known as resorption, can eventually progress to the point where the jaw can no longer support an implant.
In some cases, there has been minimal resorption, but a bone graft is still necessary because a patient’s bone has suffered damage due to other unfortunate circumstances.
The patients most likely to require a bone graft include:
- People who lost their natural teeth a long time ago.
- Older individuals.
- Smokers (including those who smoked regularly in the past).
- Those with a history of gum disease or other dental infections.
- People with a history of bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching).
- Individuals with certain nutritional deficiencies or medical conditions that affect bone health.
Do You Need a Bone Graft?
The only way to find out for certain whether you need a bone graft is to visit your dentist. Using either X-rays or a CBCT scan, they can evaluate the state of your jawbone and provide you with details on what it would take for you to qualify for dental implants.
Do not be discouraged if you find out that you need a bone graft. Although the surgery might extend your tooth replacement timeline, it will ultimately help you to enjoy a healthy, strong, and complete smile.
