At Capital Smiles, we work to stay on top of the latest in dental technology to bring you the very best methods
and procedures for maximally successful dentistry. Dental implants are one of your Capital District dentist specialties, Dr. Erin Page are pleased to announce that we have recently invested in an exciting new procedure that enhances the success of implant dentistry and accelerates the rate of healing: the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)!
Healthy Bone Structure Promotes Dental Implant Success
Dental implants are titanium screws that take the place of your missing tooth’s root. The titanium implant gradually fuses to the jawbone through the process known as osseointegration. Even in healthy patients, osseointegration is slow going — it can take up to six months to complete, depending on the location of the dental implant. Patients with certain health concerns can have contraindications to implants, surgery, and bone grafting – this is where PRP and PRF come in.
To speed up or encourage the integration and healing of implants and bone grafts, Dr. Page introduce the PRP and PRF treatments. With these advanced procedures, we can speed up the time-to-teeth for all of our patients, and increase the success of dental implants on higher risk patients.
How PRP and PRF Improve Dental Implant Procedures
Your blood platelets play a crucial role in your oral and overall health. They especially promote healing, as reservoirs of the growth factors that encourage regeneration in your bone tissue. When we can extract this plasma and fibrin that’s full of platelets and then apply it directly to the area where we want healthy bone to grow, it’s sort of magic — speeding up healing and reducing the treatment time for your dental implant procedure!
PRP and PRF have been used for decades, but recent advancements in technology allow us to perform this treatment from the comfort of our office. That increase of efficiency reduces costs and improves the experience for everyone involved.
The PRP/PRF Procedure for Enhanced Healing
We use your own blood to perform PRP/PRF. First, we will draw a small amount, then centrifuge it, or spin it around in a special machine to extract the plasma and/or fibrin. Once we have the growth factors, we inject them from the blood back into your jawbone, directly to the spot where we want to encourage growth.
