Summer is a busy season. Unfortunately, the hot weather and increased physical activity can contribute to a lot of sweating, and excessive sweating is a risk factor for dehydration. Not only can dehydration make you feel ill, but it is also dangerous for your oral health! This blog post explains why it is a threat to your smile, how you can recognize dehydration, and what you can do to stay hydrated this summer.
Dehydration and Your Oral Health
Dehydration can cause your saliva production to slow down, leading to a dry mouth. Without enough saliva to wash away food particles and bacteria, you are at an increased risk of issues like cavities and gum disease. Plus, saliva contains minerals that are important for fortifying the teeth; without enough of it, your enamel could weaken! Mouth sores and bad breath may also develop.
Sneaky Signs of Dehydration
Here are some subtle signs that might indicate you are dehydrated:
- Your mouth feels dry.
- Your urine is darker than usual and has a strong odor.
- You are experiencing muscle spasms or cramps.
- You have a headache.
- You are unusually tired.
- You feel hungry even if you recently ate. (Hunger and thirst signals come from the same part of the brain, so it can be easy to mix them up!)
How to Stay Hydrated
The amount of water you need each day can vary depending on the weather, what you eat, and your level of physical activity. Whenever you plan to do anything that might involve a lot of sweating, try to take in extra hydration the day before, and bring a big water bottle with you when you are away from home so you can sip on it throughout the day.
Here are some additional tips for staying hydrated:
- Enjoy fruits and vegetables with high water content. Watermelon, cucumbers, and many other types of produce are full of water and can contribute to whole-body hydration.
- Drink electrolytes. Coconut water, sugar-free sports beverages, and electrolyte drink mixes can help to replace electrolytes that get lost in sweat. (Be careful not to overdo it with these beverages — they could harm your teeth if you consume them too frequently!)
- Get electrolytes from other sources. You do not necessarily need to drink your electrolytes. A banana and a handful of salted nuts, combined with a glass of plain water, can do much to replenish electrolyte reserves and keep you properly hydrated.
- Use a water tracker. Many fitness apps have a water tracker that can remind you to drink enough throughout the day. Some smart watches even have technology that can estimate your current level of hydration!
