Invisalign Attachments: What Are They? Do They Hurt?

Invisalign is a popular orthodontic treatment that uses clear custom aligner trays to gently shift the teeth into their proper positions. However, the aligners do not always work alone. Sometimes, they require Invisalign attachments. What are these attachments, what do they do, and how might they affect your overall treatment experience? This blog post shares some important information.

An Introduction to Invisalign Attachments

When you hear the term “Invisalign attachment,” you might automatically think they are something that gets attached to your aligners. But the truth is that they actually get placed on your teeth! They are small bumps, which are colored to match your enamel, that get placed on certain teeth in order to make sure that the force of your aligners is properly guided. They offer valuable anchorage points that can make your treatment more efficient and effective.

Invisalign attachments are not the same thing as Invisalign bumps and bite ramps, which are directly attached to the aligners.

Not everyone requires Invisalign attachments. If you do, your dentist will likely talk to you about that during your consultation. The attachments may need to stay on your teeth throughout your entire treatment, though for some patients, early removal is possible.

What Do the Attachments Feel Like?

The process of placing Invisalign attachments is relatively comfortable. After your appointment, though, you might notice mild discomfort due to the increased pressure on your teeth. That should wear off in a few days.

When the time comes for the attachments to be removed, that should be easy as well. Your dentist has a special instrument that can easily take them off your teeth. Then, any residue will be polished off. This should be a painless process, though you might notice some mild pressure as your dental team is working.

What Else Should You Know About Invisalign Attachments?

Since Invisalign attachments are small and discreet, they should not adversely affect your smile’s appearance. They should also not affect your ability to eat a wide variety of foods. However, it would be wise to avoid overindulging in hard and sticky items, which might dislodge the attachments.

It is also worth noting that the attachments can become slightly discolored over time. You can minimize this issue by reducing your intake of highly pigmented foods and adhering to a thorough oral hygiene routine. If you notice any stains on your enamel around your attachments, it is likely to be subtle. Your hygienist might be able to polish it away during a routine cleaning.

Invisalign attachments might play an important role in your orthodontic treatment. Talk to your care provider if you have questions about them and how they work.
